We are naturally event-focused, whether materially or spiritually. When we review our lives, what usually comes to mind are the events that seemed important to us. Yet the vast majority of what we think and do is quite routine and goes on almost invisibly in the background of our life. The more settled our life and character are, the fewer life changing events we tend to experience and the more we look to feedback to make the small adjustments in our habitual way of working, relating, eating, exercising, sleeping, etc. that keep our life on course and avoid problems or negative events.
Similarly, spiritual messages usually start out as amazing moments that catch our attention and alter the course of our life. When we look at our spiritual lives, what comes to mind are the events—the high points and low points. Yet, it is the background activity that is actually, what our spiritual messages tend to concentrate on, once we have decoded enough of the more obvious ones. Committing to a certain direction, we look to messages to help us make the smaller everyday corrections that keep our spiritual development on track.
A specific example can be found in the case mentioned in the last newsletter of one thing after another not going as I had hoped. I get upset and do my best to get them to correct their slip-ups. Since both my material and spiritual lives seem on course to me, I take these materially aggravating messages as reminders that it is particularly important for me at this point in my development to be more attentive to what I am doing. The same message that ten years ago might have led to deep soul searching and a change in direction now simply calls me be more organized and pay more attention to what I am doing spiritually. I need better concentration on things like my prayers, my reading, my writing. When my concentration lapses, I think of how the work of the others didn't lead to the best results in the end and see the spiritual results of my efforts as being like theirs. It reminds me that I really can do better than that.
Initially, it is difficult to see the specificity in this background feedback. It's like noticing that you are tired in your material life but have no way to tell whether it was from hunger, lack of sleep, overexertion, etc. Yet, as you look at your feedback as comments on the basic elements in your spiritual life, you start to understand that each thing that you do with a spiritual INTENTION has a different effect on a different system in your soul. The better you know which of your spiritual routines needs improvement and which not, the better you get at decoding these background messages.### So, if your messages seem to be getting more subtle, don't be discouraged. Apply yourself in a patient and persistent way to the practices that maintain your spiritual connection and track the daily changes in this lower level feedback.
