About a month ago, I decided it was time to get to know my “inner guide” better. I had always thought of it as being the voice of my conscience, but in the past week several messages made me aware that my inner guide was far more than this.
The message that made me aware of this was the following. I went to buy some hinges for a door and I told the salesperson that I wanted them in satin nickel. He mumbled something and I confirmed yes. I had heard the word “unlacquered” but was so sure he had heard what I said that I didn't clarify. I then thought as I was waiting, I had better check to make certain that they are all the right ones and that none were scratched. They were all packed so neatly, however, that I didn't do it. When I got home and went to show them to my wife, Susan, I saw the hinges were unlacquered brass.
When I told Susan that I had thought I should check them but I hadn't, she compared my experience to when a more spiritually mature friend described a similar inner voice in a completely material situation as God's help. At that moment, it hit me that the whole scenario was a message to teach me how to identify the voice of my inner guide in the guise of common sense. After all, where does common sense come from after all if not from our soul? It's our soul’s resources that make it possible for us to stand up to our instinctive drives and invest them in productive affairs—whether material or spiritual. By paying more attention to this quiet inner voice in material decisions, I’ll become able to detect it in spiritual ones as well.
As a result, I now think that the voice of my inner guide can be discerned giving common sense advice in almost any situation where I learn to listen to it. If everyday life is a classroom—a tangible place in which to see the implications of our thoughts, feelings and actions, then spiritual logic would suggest that if I ignore material common sense, I will in all likelihood ignore spiritual common sense too. It suggested that the best way to cultivate spiritual common sense was to first develop better material common sense with a spiritual INTENTION—to increase the attention I can pay to my soul. My message had practical consequences, making me even more aware of the details of how I justify ignoring prudence and common sense.
